The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce continues to build strong membership value for women executives and business owners through merger with the Alexandria Professional Women’s Network. Programs and services will expand opportunities for new business, friendships/partnerships, leadership roles and professional development.

The success of this new group is dependent upon women getting involved in leadership roles. Volunteers will collaborate with Chamber staff to set the calendar of programs and speakers to meet the unique needs of this networking group. The goal of ACPWN is to offer programs that enhance the value of membership and new opportunities for involvement for women in business.
Jean Palmer, one of the APWN's initial founders, provides history on how APWN began and her thoughts on this new partnership.
The Alexandria Professional Women's Network (APWN) was founded in March 1987 to meet the needs of local businesswomen seeking to support one another in business endeavors. The three women who assessed the need for a networking organization for women in business were Linda Slusser, Betty Eiler and Jean Palmer, who designed APWN's organization structure, long-term goals, and mission.
Their next step was to recruit enthusiasts who later became the seventeen founding members of the APWN. The original group met at the Steak & Ale restaurant in Alexandria in March 1987 and by August needed a larger facility. Over the years APWN monthly luncheons have been held in various hotels and restaurants throughout the city of Alexandria.
APWN continues to grow and be successful in offering area businesswomen support and encouragement in achieving their goals. With the celebration of APWN's 24th anniversary in March of 2011, APWN looks forward to now joining the Chamber and becoming ACPWN, and starting it's 25th year with a whole new chapter of it's life. Congratulations to all of who have made this possible.
